Vera felt the rage build in her as she studied the letter in her hands. It was from the Department of Labor and they were denying her benefits based on her being terminated for violating company policy.
She instantly made a call to the Labor Department’s main office for unemployment benefits, and tried not to cry as she explained to them that Hartwig was lying about everything.
"You can appeal, but it really makes no difference." The customer service rep said truthfully, a tinge of sympathy in his voice. "They usually deny a claim if you were terminated for breaching company policy. And there’s also the theft…"
"But I didn't...."
"Don't know if it'll make a difference," the rep began, but you do have options if you feel that you were wrongfully terminated. Legal options."
But she had already gone that route, calling a few lawyers over the past couple of weeks.
Not a one of them thought that she had a case, not based on the evidence that Hartwig had fabricated against her plus the bad reviews with her signatures on them.
It was a loss cause, no matter what course of action she’d attempted.
Vera didn't even wait as the rep continued talking, simply hanging up the phone as the tears slid down her cheeks.
Lizzie was finishing out her last day at the office and glancing at her watch, Vera knew exactly what had to be done.
Just as she hung up the phone, her doorbell rang. Vera narrowed her eyes as she peered through the peephole.
Michael DelVecchio stood there, picking his nose as he waited for her to open the door.
She was sick of him and his shit.
"I know you're in there, Vera." He said, as she sighed heavily. "Open up or I call the cops."
Vera definitely didn't have the rent this time and didn't know where the money was going to come from to pay it.
She slowly opened the door to greet him.
"Hello, Mr. DelVecchio." She murmured as his eyes slid up and down the tight, black leggings she wore. A slow smile spread over his face as he moved closer, leaning up against her doorframe familiarly.
"Your rent is due, Vera." He drawled, staring at her without blinking.
"I know it is, and I will get it to you...."
"You have been dodging me all week." He said with a mirthless laugh as he saw her cheeks color in embarrassment. "You owe me."
"I just need another day or two...at the most..." Vera begged, feeling tears prick her eyelids as her throat tightened, constricted.
Don't lose your shit in front of him.
Shaking his head, Mike whipped out his cell phone and started dialing. He was glaring at her now, phone to his ear, as she wrung her hands and begged him not to call the police.
"We can work something out." Vera heard herself say and Mike put the phone away as she moved closer to him, putting a hand on his shoulder as much as it disgusted her.
Again, anything was better than having to move back home to Douglaston.
Even this.
